A Bonterra Apricot Case Study
Our Piece of the Pie (OPP) is a Baltimore nonprofit that helps 14–24-year-old urban youth become economically independent. Faced with an unfocused "cradle-to-grave" approach that spread resources thin and left the board unable to demonstrate clear outcomes, leadership decided to concentrate on a single target population and define a measurable strategy.
OPP used a theory-of-change process to adopt a relationship-centered model linking youth development, education, and employment: they opened three schools for over-age, under-credited students, introduced project- and mastery-based learning, built career pathways and internships, and tightened hiring and youth engagement practices. Paired with rigorous data tracking (ETO) and standardized implementation, the refocus produced more consistent program quality, stronger referral pipelines, clearer impact measurement, and full organizational alignment with the mission.
