A BNSF Logistics Case Study
Wind Turbine Manufacturer, a company with 30 years of experience in designing, manufacturing, and operating wind turbines, needed a wind turbine distribution center in Nebraska. The site had to be within 100 miles of the wind farm, have rail and highway access, and provide at least 12.5 acres for storing tower sections and machine heads before delivery. BNSF Logistics was brought in to help identify and develop the laydown yard site.
BNSF Logistics found an agricultural property 22 miles from the wind farm with more than 10,000 feet of railroad track and then developed the site to meet the project’s heavy-load requirements. Using drone surveying, Virtual Surveyor, Civil 3D, and civil construction work, BNSF Logistics improved the ground to support a 250-ton crawler crane and 245,000-pound machine head, and upgraded the access road for transport. The project was completed on time and within budget, enabling the on-time delivery of 300 tower sections and 100 machine heads, while creating a reliable laydown site for future projects.
