A BNSF Logistics Case Study
The Manufacturer of Plastic Liners needed to move 250 40-foot containers overseas to a gold mine over six months, with vessels sailing only once a month and strict limits on how many containers the mine could receive each week. Port rules also allowed only two free days to move containers out and seven free days to unload them, creating a risk of costly demurrage fees. BNSF Logistics was brought in to manage the ocean-centered logistics challenge.
BNSF Logistics negotiated with the carrier to secure 21 free days for the containers and arranged storage so shipments could be staged until the mine was ready to receive them. By coordinating with ocean carriers, customs, trucking providers, storage facilities, and the mining company, BNSF Logistics kept the project moving smoothly and on schedule. The result was more than $150,000 in savings, with the project completed on time and under budget.
