BNSF Logistics Creates Intermodal Solution for Big Box Retailer

European Big Box Retailer, a large retailer with North American and international traffic and multiple distribution centers, needed to move freight from Mexico to the United States but had limited experience with exports, customs, and cross-border transportation. The company also faced a shortage of available capacity. BNSF Logistics stepped in to help with an intermodal freight solution.

BNSF Logistics created a partial rail-based intermodal strategy supported by bilingual personnel, vendor negotiations, and ongoing import/export and customs assistance. This reduced capacity constraints, lowered costs, and improved on-time pickups, which strengthened relationships with Mexican vendors. The solution fulfilled a Mexico spot request, opened new lanes to U.S. distribution centers, and increased volume enough to earn incentive rates from vendors.
