A BlueCat Networks Case Study
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a large academic health center with thousands of students and staff, a 750‑bed medical center, and a network that spans 30+ remote sites with roughly 30,000 IP addresses. Rapid growth in IP‑connected devices — from smartphones and tablets to medical equipment, cameras and access controls — made it difficult to reliably manage, automate and delegate DNS, DHCP and IP address administration across the university and hospital.
MUSC replaced its defunct system with BlueCat Address Manager for centralized IPAM and DNS/DHCP control, chosen for ease of use, redundancy, workflow delegation and strong support, and deployed it in phased stages to avoid outages. The solution gave real‑time visibility into IP space, reduced manual help requests by enabling self‑service for field engineers, conserved public IPs, improved core service reliability, and positioned MUSC for IPv6 adoption.
