Burns & McDonnell Turns to Revu to Plan Utility Work for Kansas City Downtown Streetcar Project

Burns & McDonnell, a top-20 ENR engineering firm, led utility coordination for the two-mile, $100M Kansas City Downtown Streetcar project — one of the largest underground utility relocations in Kansas City history. The team had to work with more than 25 public and private utilities to replace and relocate aging water and sewer infrastructure (including up to 18,000 ft of water main, ~13,400 ft of sewer CIPP and 65 manholes), while keeping documents centralized, enabling markups by multiple stakeholders, and preserving a single source of truth.

To solve this, Burns & McDonnell implemented Bluebeam Revu with Studio Projects, uploading plan PDFs, sharing a custom markup toolset, and training partners (with Bluebeam Vu available for those who couldn’t install Revu). About 65 partners made 600+ markups across project phases, plans were accessible in the field, and version control was maintained. The approach saved an estimated 320 hours over eight months, cut printing/shipping costs, and improved meeting efficiency and real‑time coordination.
