Giant Eagle Brings a New Level of Accuracy to Workforce Scheduling

Giant Eagle is a large, family‑owned grocery chain with roughly $9.9 billion in annual sales, 229 supermarkets and 178 fuel/convenience stores that also offer services like banking, dry cleaning and child care. Before 2007 the company struggled with mostly manual scheduling and outdated time‑and‑attendance systems, which led to chronic overstaffing or understaffing, excessive overtime, payroll errors and concerns about compliance—especially given the large number of minors employed.

To solve this, Giant Eagle implemented JDA Workforce Management with StandardsPro engineered labor standards, driving labor needs from item movement and case loads rather than sales revenue and forecasting using POS data, shipments and scales. The system schedules labor in 15‑minute intervals while enforcing labor rules and team‑member profiles, yielding reduced payroll costs, improved scheduling accuracy and customer service, easier compliance, less administrative work and fewer payroll errors.
