University of Sydney uses Blue Frontier to build PEARL Pal for TB diagnosis in Kiribati

The University of Sydney, as part of the PEARL Study, faced the challenge of diagnosing TB and leprosy in Kiribati where limited connectivity made digital data management difficult. They partnered with vendor Blue Frontier to develop a mobile application that could provide on-device interoperability between different diagnostic tools while working offline.

Blue Frontier created the Android app PEARL Pal using React Native. The solution enabled offline data collection and daily synchronization with the REDCap database, transferring unique patient identifiers from Simprints to ensure accurate health records. This innovative approach piloted a new method for patient identification in the Pacific Islands and established a foundation for a more distributable version of the app intended to become a global public good.
