USD Launches Climate Action Plan with Bloom Energy

The customer, the University of San Diego (USD), needed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and lower high energy costs as part of its Climate Action Plan. A key challenge was finding a cost-effective, reliable power source to complement its existing solar installation. To address this, USD turned to Bloom Energy and its Bloom Energy Servers, a solid oxide fuel cell technology.

Bloom Energy implemented a cleaner, electrochemical 1 MW fuel cell system on USD's campus. This solution provides constant, highly efficient power, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 20% compared to the grid and eliminating harmful particulates. The project is expected to cut emissions by 1.4 million pounds annually and generate an estimated $3 million in energy savings over 15 years, helping USD progress toward its 2020 emissions goal.
