Volkmann Straßen- und Verkehrstechnik faced the challenge of reducing mechanical stress on the Moseltal Bridge by ensuring trucks maintained a minimum 50-meter distance. They needed a data protection-compliant solution for reliable, around-the-clock distance measurement on a busy highway, moving away from complex video systems. They turned to vendor Blickfeld and its Qb2 LiDAR sensor for this traffic monitoring application.

Blickfeld implemented a solution using its Qb2 LiDAR sensors mounted on roadside poles to detect, classify, and measure the distance between trucks. If the minimum distance was breached, an electronic display informed the driver. The system operated stably and reliably day and night, with initial observations suggesting it successfully increased driver awareness and encouraged more conscious deceleration and distance maintenance.
