Tata Motors European Technical Centre creates 9 car iterations in 5 days with Blender

Tata Motors European Technical Centre, the automotive design division of Tata Motors, faced a challenge in speeding up the early stages of its digital creation process. Using their traditional industrial design software, Alias, for initial form studies was too time-consuming. To address this, they turned to the open-source 3D software Blender to make their digital workflow easier and more efficient.

The solution involved implementing Blender to quickly create early-stage models, such as car seats and exterior forms, based on scans and sketches. As a result, the team significantly accelerated its workflow; creating nine iterations of a base car took only five days in Blender compared to ten to fifteen days in Alias. This allowed for real-time design modifications and provided management with a faster way to sign off on design volumes before moving to more precise engineering in Alias. Blender proved to be a highly effective tool for rapid prototyping.
