Case Study: Achmea reduces labor costs by 9 FTE with BlackLine

A BlackLine Case Study

Preview of the Achmea Case Study

Reducing Overall Labor Costs by 9 FTE Through Simplifying Audits

Achmea, the Netherlands’ leading insurer serving half of Dutch households, faced a labor‑intensive, paper-driven month-end close across eight locations and multiple subsidiaries. Maintaining compliance with IFRS, Sarbanes‑Oxley and Solvency II was difficult because more than 40 paper balance‑sheet records per year were printed, audited onsite, and hard to track, preventing consistent internal controls and timely reporting.

Achmea implemented BlackLine’s Finance Controls and Automation platform integrated with SAP and deployed it across business units in nine months. The cloud solution automated account reconciliations and variance detection, enforced segregated duties and real‑time tracking, allowed remote auditor access, and reduced accounting headcount by the equivalent of 9 FTE—streamlining audits, strengthening controls, and improving close efficiency and cost management.
