A BlackLine Case Study
Aetna, a major U.S. health insurer, faced outdated finance technology and time‑consuming, manual reconciliation processes that were spread across hundreds of people. To improve visibility, controls and efficiency, leadership created a finance center of excellence and chose BlackLine to standardize processes and support a shared‑services operating model.
Using BlackLine (Account Reconciliations, Task Management, Transaction Matching) and centralizing work in the CoE, Aetna dramatically reduced manual effort—achieving the output of roughly 400 people with about 12—while reaching an 85% auto‑certification result in initial testing. The implementation freed FTEs for higher‑value work, shifted controls from detective to proactive, prevented potential issues, and established an ongoing partnership that supports continuous innovation and process improvement.
