A Blackline Safety Case Study
NiSource, a major regulated utility serving nearly four million customers with about 7,500 employees, faced typical utility field hazards — electrocution, falls, chemical exposure and working alone in remote locations — and sought a way to proactively protect workers. To address this, NiSource began adopting Blackline Safety’s G7 Safety Devices, which provide fall and no-motion detection, two‑way voice and text, push‑to‑talk, gas detection and GPS monitoring.
Blackline Safety deployed roughly 1,500 devices to date (with 1,300 more scheduled by the end of 2022) and integrated their cloud-connected monitoring to alert and assist workers in real time. The G7 devices detected high CO levels at multiple incidents, enabled workers locked in basements to call for help, uncovered improper boiler exhaust, and supported emergency responses to a motorcycle crash — preventing harm and speeding rescue. NiSource also credited Blackline Safety’s collaboration on configuration and the use of “super users” for smoother adoption and improved sensitivity tuning.
