Sun International, the South Africa–based gaming and leisure company that holds the Miss South Africa pageant license, needed a way for its small, frequently traveling three‑person pageant team to stay connected, coordinate with production partners, and deliver timely social media updates. Email on PCs was slow for field work, SMS was unreliable and costly, and live posting from contestants and the reigning Miss South Africa was essential to keep media coverage fresh.

As part of a sponsorship with Research In Motion, the team and titleholders were equipped with BlackBerry smartphones running BBM, and Facebook and Twitter apps, enabling instant messaging, email on the go, and live social posting. The result was faster, more reliable communication and coordination (with delivery/read receipts and file/photo sharing to avoid unnecessary travel), real‑time social updates that feed press coverage, and overall streamlined event organisation.
