A BlackBerry Case Study
Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) is a world-leading melanoma research, treatment and education centre that manages the largest melanoma research database and treats about 10,000 patients a year. Faced with strict Australian and international privacy regulations (including the Notification of Data Breaches Act, GDPR and HIPAA), extensive international collaboration, and the need to protect and retain control of sensitive patient and research data, MIA needed a secure, easy-to-use platform that integrated with existing workflows and provided strong auditing and access controls.
MIA partnered with Optus and deployed BlackBerry Workspaces (with BlackBerry Professional Services) to provide encrypted file sharing, persistent access controls, comprehensive logging and multi‑OS support. The rollout—starting with clinical trials and expanding to clinics, radiology and administrative teams—enabled secure international collaboration, faster administrative processes (replacing slow registered mail with secure email), confirmed audit trails and improved patient confidence in data handling, all with minimal training.
