Driving Instructors Save Time and Decrease Lost Revenue with Help From BlackBerry Smartphones

Young Drivers of Canada, a national driver-training company with roughly 325 instructors, faced frequent late or missed lessons because instructors work constantly on the road and most students (aged 16–19) often arrived late or in the wrong place. Without a standard company-wide way to contact students and instructors, the scheduling office had to chase down appointments, creating about 20,000 no-shows a year, lost revenue and low instructor morale.

The company issued BlackBerry smartphones to its mobile instructors so head office, instructors and students could communicate instantly via email, BBM, text or phone and use onboard GPS for directions. The result: missed lessons fell from about 20,000 to 5,000 annually, improved transparency and accountability in scheduling, higher employee satisfaction and reduced financial losses.
