A BlackBerry Case Study
Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya, Indonesia is a large public teaching hospital (about 2,000 staff) that was struggling to keep doctors connected across the facility. Reliance on laptops, pagers and face-to-face meetings left clinicians often out of reach, slowing case discussions and information sharing; the hospital needed a secure, low‑cost communications solution that would work with the BlackBerry smartphones staff already used.
Soetomo equipped 140 anesthesia staff with BlackBerry smartphones and used BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for near‑real‑time, secure messaging, multimedia sharing and group chats (about 40 active groups of 5–30 participants), with calendar syncing to track availability. The result was faster, more secure internal communication, easier sharing of attachments and patient information, and reduced IT costs—improving collaboration and supporting better patient care.
