Blackberry 10 Inspires Argentinean Movie Theater Operator: Reinvents Movie App With New Look And Greater Social Integration

Cine Hoyts Argentina, a large multiplex operator with 10 complexes and 99 screens serving about 12 million moviegoers a year, needed to reinvent its popular mobile offering to take advantage of the new BlackBerry 10 design and social capabilities. With roughly 40% of customers already buying tickets online or via mobile, Hoyts wanted a richer, more social and convenient app experience that would differentiate the brand and reduce box-office traffic.

Working with Orugga, Hoyts rebuilt a native BlackBerry 10 app using Cascades and QML, adding social sharing (Facebook, BBM, Twitter), seat-sharing and group reservations, maps, QR mobile tickets and streamlined payments. The refreshed app has driven strong adoption — BlackBerry accounted for about 90% of their mobile downloads and ticket sales, with 270,000 downloads since September 2011 and ~100,000 tickets sold in Q4 2012 — while freeing staff from ticket counters and helping attract more customers.
