A Blackbaud Case Study
Blackbaud, a software and services company serving the nonprofit and education sectors, wanted to move beyond general volunteerism to help employees use their professional skills to strengthen nonprofit governance. The challenge was to encourage and equip staff to take on committee and board roles so nonprofits would gain strategic value—not just extra hands.
In 2010 Blackbaud launched the Nonprofit Leadership Circle, an internal group of about 80 employee board members that receives quarterly programs, curated resources, peer exchange and expert briefings on topics like governance, fundraising and board recruitment. The program increased employees’ nonprofit leadership skills, boosted board effectiveness at partner organizations, deepened employee engagement in community causes and produced measurable local impact through stronger, more sustainable nonprofit boards.
