A Blackbaud Case Study
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) honors fallen firefighters and supports their survivors through programs including dozens of annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs held nationwide. Although participation grew, many climbers treated the events as solemn memorials and were hesitant to embrace fundraising, leaving the organization looking for a way to nurture a fundraising culture around these heartfelt events without undermining their purpose.
In 2015 NFFF moved peer-to-peer fundraising for 19 Stair Climbs to TeamRaiser and provided coaching to participants; the platform’s public leaderboards sparked friendly competition and encouraged giving. Stair Climbs on TeamRaiser produced roughly three-quarters of national fundraising—outperforming non-TeamRaiser events by more than 3-to-1—expanded the donor base dramatically, and led NFFF to plan a full roll-out in 2016 with ambitious local and national goals.
