Olympus Division Reduces Operational Risks With Improved Open Source Governance

Olympus Software Technology Corp. (O-Soft), a division of Olympus Corp. that develops embedded software for medical, industrial and imaging products, faced growing governance and licensing challenges as developers increasingly used open source components. The company needed companywide buy-in for consistent OSS usage policies, wanted to avoid shipping products with unknown open source code, and had to integrate compliance across diverse product teams and global subsidiaries without disrupting development.

O-Soft formed a cross‑functional OSS committee, deployed Black Duck SCA to automate code discovery and integrate scans into the development toolchain, and created an OSS Knowledge Site with customized guidelines, templates and training. As a result, scans are required before shipping, unintended OSS use across subsidiaries is much easier to detect, licensing risk has been significantly reduced, and stakeholder adoption of the policy has improved.
