A Black Duck Case Study
Magneti Marelli, a global automotive systems supplier, was contracted to build a GENIVI-based in-vehicle infotainment system for a major European OEM that required strict adherence to GENIVI rules and open source license obligations. After more than two years of development the codebase had grown to 7–8 million lines, much of it from external suppliers who often did not provide bills of materials, making manual license review impractical and leaving the company unable to prove compliance.
Magneti Marelli implemented Black Duck SCA (with BearingPoint consulting and a centralized compliance team including legal) to automatically scan and match every line of code against a comprehensive open source knowledge base. Black Duck generated bills of materials and compliance reports, identified and helped resolve license issues (including rewriting ambiguous code), restored customer trust, reduced rework, increased developer awareness, and was rolled out to other projects as part of a lasting open source management program.
