Case Study: Intel achieves reduced software rework and mitigated licensing risk with Black Duck Protex

A Black Duck Case Study

Preview of the Intel Case Study

Intel - Customer Case Study

Intel, a global leader in silicon and software development, faced a growing challenge: ensuring that its mix of open source, third‑party and proprietary code complied with complex and changing licensing requirements across thousands of projects and terabytes of code. The scale and diversity of available open source—spread across many sites and licensed under hundreds of different terms—made it difficult to reliably detect incompatible code and avoid late-stage rework and legal exposure.

Intel piloted and then deployed Black Duck’s Protex platform company‑wide, integrating it into legal compliance processes and training about 1,000 staff. Protex’s KnowledgeBase and scanning tools helped catch licensing conflicts early, reduced software rework, increased developer awareness of licensing obligations, enabled safer code reuse (including third‑party and legacy internal code), and lowered legal and business risk.
