The University of Sheffield needed modern digital signage for its new Information Commons (IC), a six‑floor student hub with more than 1,300 study spaces, 500 networked PCs and complex local content needs. Facing multiple content channels and the requirement for local browser‑based text updates on each floor, AV manager Ian Knowles selected Black Box Network Services to provide a networked digital‑signage solution using iCOMPEL™ units and Samsung LCD panels.

Black Box Network Services deployed a system of 18 iCOMPEL™ units paired with 18 Samsung LCD panels to deliver remotely and locally controlled, multi‑channel displays that allow authorized staff to update content via browser. The installation was completed in three working days, operates 24/7 across all six floors, and now provides dynamic, Flash‑based messaging that reliably communicates with staff, students and visitors—giving the IC a modern, measurable 21st‑century communications capability.
