Public Safety Answering Points - Customer Case Study

Public Safety Answering Points, one of the busiest PSAPs in the southeastern United States serving about 2.7 million residents and processing over two million public safety calls annually, faced a hardware challenge: each call taker needed to run multiple PCs but only had a single mouse and a specialty VersaKey keyboard, which their existing setup could not reliably support. They engaged Black Box Network Services to evaluate and recommend a solution, focusing on the Black Box Freedom KVM desktop switch.

Black Box Network Services tested the specialty keyboard with a sample unit, updated the Freedom switch software to support the keyboard’s custom hot‑key sequences, and deployed the Freedom KVM to enable seamless mouse-based switching across multiple PCs and displays. The result: call takers now operate multiple PCs with one keyboard and mouse—instantly switching between screens, avoiding additional training, improving response time, and supporting up to four screens per PC for future expansion.
