New York’s Rockefeller Center Concourse Provides Tenants and Visitors with Seamless Wireless Connectivity

Tishman Speyer and Rockefeller Group, owners of New York’s underground Rockefeller Center Concourse, faced the challenge of providing seamless wireless connectivity in a high‑traffic, labyrinthine space used by an average of 65,000 commuters and visitors daily (rising above 100,000 during the holiday season). Because signals cannot penetrate the concourse, they needed an in‑building distributed antenna system (DAS) that wouldn’t disrupt pedestrian flow or require frequent equipment upgrades as carriers and services changed — a challenge they addressed with Black Box Network Services’ DAS solution.

Black Box Network Services designed, project‑managed and installed a shared in‑building DAS, conducting RF site surveys and coordinating with carriers to deliver comprehensive 3G/4G coverage across the Concourse. The BBNS system extended service for national carriers including AT&T, T‑Mobile and Sprint, supporting hundreds of thousands of visitors and enabling multiple services (two‑way radio, paging, fire/life/safety), while remaining cost‑effective, low‑maintenance and scalable for future needs.
