Delivering enterprise-grade WLAN coverage to the bedside

University Medical Center of Southern Nevada faced an unreliable WLAN that threatened rollout of the CareFusion Pyxis® Specimen Collection System—used by more than 1,500 clinicians with 245 Wi‑Fi barcode scanners and 145 printers—across its 850,000 sq. ft., multi‑building campus. To achieve the enterprise‑grade, bedside coverage required, UMCSN engaged Black Box Network Services (working with Enterasys equipment) to design a robust wireless strategy and infrastructure.

Black Box Network Services implemented a layered WLAN and DAS solution, removing about 1,000 legacy APs and connecting 335 Enterasys RoamAbout® 4102 APs into a centrally managed architecture. The deployment delivered campus‑wide, certification‑grade coverage, enabled uninterrupted CareFusion use, and produced measurable benefits: only one wireless help‑desk call in over a year (versus as many as 30/month typical), roughly 70% fewer maintenance hours, just two AP failures since install, and only 20% of Wi‑Fi capacity currently utilized—freeing staff to adopt a dozen+ new wireless applications.
