Case Study: Ranken Jordan–A Pediatric Specialty Hospital achieves seamless medical‑grade Vocera VoIP coverage with Black Box Network Services

A Black Box Network Services Case Study

Preview of the Ranken Jordan-A Pediatric Specialty Hospital Case Study

A new standard for pediatric care at Ranken Jordan required ubiquitous wireless for facility-wide deployment of Vocera

Ranken Jordan-A Pediatric Specialty Hospital needed ubiquitous, medical‑grade wireless to support a facility‑wide deployment of Vocera VoIP wireless pendants so highly mobile staff could communicate without relying on desk phones or disruptive overhead paging. Because patients and staff move throughout all areas — elevators, stairwells, closets and outdoors — the hospital required a retrofit solution that would eliminate dropped connections and serve as part of the emergency response system. Black Box Network Services was engaged to design and deliver that wireless infrastructure for Vocera.

Black Box Network Services implemented a WLAN covering 60,000 sq. ft. plus campus exterior using 51 Cisco access points (42 inside, 8 outside, 1 in the elevator) to support roughly 125 Vocera badges, 24 laptops and 10 PDAs. The installation delivered uninterrupted Vocera sessions during full‑building tests, proved low maintenance, and enabled Ranken Jordan to replace pagers, radios and walkie‑talkies with a single hands‑free solution. The deployment improved patient safety and care, and nursing estimated a savings of about 45 minutes per nurse per shift locating staff.
