August, maker of the August Smart Lock and related IoT offerings, faced the challenge of securing a connected door lock without introducing “backdoors” or new risks to customers. To assess hardware, firmware, and software across the platform, August engaged Bishop Fox to perform Application Assessments and Penetration Testing and to review the product’s overall security posture.

Bishop Fox deployed mobile experts and product-security researchers to conduct thorough assessments, collaborate on encryption and authentication design reviews, and deliver detailed findings and recommendations. As a result of Bishop Fox’s work, August shipped the Smart Lock with two-factor authentication, Bluetooth Low Energy encryption, and an over‑the‑air update mechanism to deliver security fixes—measurable improvements that strengthened customer trust and helped position the product as an industry-leading secure IoT device (Bishop Fox even uses the lock in its own offices).
