A BioCatch Case Study
Top 5 UK Bank faced a sharp rise in social engineering voice scams, also known as Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud, after criminals used a public airline data breach to impersonate bank staff and trick customers into transferring funds. Despite a strong fraud technology stack, the bank’s existing controls could not stop these authorized-but-coerced transactions, creating significant monthly losses and threatening customer trust. BioCatch was brought in to help address the issue using behavioral biometrics and fraud detection insights.
BioCatch developed a social engineering voice scam machine learning model for the bank, using behavioral signals such as mouse movement, typing patterns, dead time, and indicators of emotional distress during sessions. The solution detected about 60% of voice scams at peak, with the planned call status feature expected to lift detection to 70–75%. As a result, Top 5 UK Bank saved between £250K and £500K per month during a four-month period, with total peak-period savings described as £500K per month in fraud losses.
