How it Can Increase Transparency and Accountability for Non-Profits

The Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy is a private nonprofit that cares for 15+ acres and a 1.3-mile stretch of downtown parks in Boston, hosting 300+ free programs annually and working with many vendors. When Finance Director Lisa Schimmel arrived, the organization relied on a manual, cash-basis payables process—paper approvals, checks, and filing—handled by a tiny finance team (about “1.4 people”), which made timely reporting and accountability for donor- and government-restricted funds difficult.

By implementing Bill.com integrated with QuickBooks, the Conservancy automated bill capture, routing and approvals and moved to accrual accounting so department heads can tag expenses to specific fund sources. The change improved transparency and donor confidence, cut more than 25 hours a month on 150+ bills, reduced paper use, sped financial reporting and receivables, and freed staff to focus on park programs and stewardship.
