A BigID Case Study
The University of Maryland, a premier public research institution, faced a significant challenge in managing sensitive data across its vast 2.5-petabyte cloud environment. With insufficient behavioral controls, sensitive information including PII and intellectual property was left exposed in platforms like Google Drive and Office365, creating substantial liability. The university's Chief Privacy Officer and his team needed an efficient way to identify and mitigate this risk without adding operational burden, leading them to partner with BigID.
By implementing BigID, the university was able to discover tens of thousands of exposed sensitive records and implement remediation workflows to move or delete the data. This proactive approach resulted in the removal of over 27,000 sensitive records and a drastically reduced risk footprint. According to IBM's breach cost metrics, BigID helped the University of Maryland save over $5 million in potential risk exposure while strengthening its overall data security and compliance posture.
