Mullins Lawyers, a Brisbane firm established in 1980 with nearly 100 staff, faced the need to speed document turnaround, increase mobility for fee earners and reduce dependence on support staff while improving workflow visibility. To address these challenges the firm piloted and in March 2015 implemented BigHand SmartNote and BigHand speech recognition technology to create a more efficient, mobile document-production process.

BigHand’s SmartNote and speech-to-text solutions automatically capture and file dictated notes to the firm’s document system, deliver drafts to lawyers’ inboxes (including mobile dictation), and provide back‑office reporting and workflow tracking. As a result Mullins achieved a 300% faster document turnaround (from ~3.5 minutes to ~1.1 minutes typing per one minute of dictation), freed secretarial time for higher‑value tasks, reduced rehiring costs, improved mobility and collaboration, and saw strong user adoption across the firm.
