Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Trust slashes costs with BigHand Mobility

Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT), which provides mental healthcare to a population of 1.2 million, was struggling with rising correspondence volumes and the logistical, security and workflow problems of analogue tape-based dictation across many community and inpatient sites. To address delayed turnaround, damaged or lost tapes, unclear backlogs and rising costs the Trust selected BigHand, deploying BigHand for Healthcare and BigHand Digital Dictation smartphone apps as a replacement for tapes and legacy recorders.

BigHand implemented a customised digital dictation, speech recognition and clinical correspondence solution for around 1,000 users, enabling clinicians to record and send dictations instantly from smartphones. The BigHand rollout eliminated tapes, improved data security, sped up turnaround times, reduced secretarial bottlenecks and improved workload allocation β€” avoiding temporary staffing costs β€” and the case study highlights a measurable scale of impact (Key number: 54%).
