Smart Waste Collection Saves the City of Philadelphia $650,000 in Annual Waste Collection Costs

The City of Philadelphia needed a better way to keep busy commercial corridors and public spaces clean, as traditional wire baskets overflowed with trash and recyclables, creating litter and high collection demands. Bigbelly provided a smart waste collection and recycling solution, including solar-powered compacting units and on-street recycling bins, to help the city increase capacity and reduce overflow.

Bigbelly helped Philadelphia replace hundreds of wire baskets with more than 1,300 smart waste and recycling units citywide, cutting collections from 17 times per week to 3 and reducing the need for three shifts to one. The city reported 70% operating cost savings, $650,000 in annual savings, 30,500 gallons of fuel saved, and a 335-ton reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions, while also making streets cleaner and calmer.
