A Bigbelly Case Study
Kitsap Transit, a public transit agency serving Kitsap County, Washington, needed a smarter way to manage waste across 1,211 stops. Heavy ridership at central stops caused overflowing bins and litter issues, while remote stops were often serviced when only partially full, wasting labor, fuel, and time. Bigbelly’s smart waste system was introduced to help solve these challenges.
After a successful pilot, Bigbelly deployed smart, sensing, high-capacity, and standard-capacity units at more than 30 locations, enabling just-in-time collections through the CLEAN dashboard. The result was a 60% reduction in collections, a 67% reduction in labor required for collection, and annual savings of 2,496 gallons of fuel, while also reducing overflows, litter, and environmental impact.
