Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Named Most Efficient Global Municipality with Bigbelly Smart Waste System

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the local authority serving a busy coastal area near Dublin, faced frequent overflowing litter bins, littered streets, and inefficiencies caused by limited waste-collection resources and unpredictable weather. The council needed a smarter way to manage public-space waste, and turned to Bigbelly’s smart waste system.

Bigbelly deployed more than 420 smart stations to replace 530 traditional litter bins, using compaction technology and collection alerts to optimize pickups only when bins were full. The results were significant: collection frequency dropped from 6.5 times to 1.6 times per week, truck usage fell from 4 to 1 per day, operating costs were cut by 75%, and the council achieved 85% collection efficiency gains, €200,000 in annual savings, and 69 tons of CO₂ reductions each year.
