Battling Wasps and Keeping High Tourist Areas Clean with Bigbelly at 850 Meters Above Sea Level

Parque Metropolitano, Santiago’s vast urban park and a major tourist destination in Chile, faced a growing waste-management challenge in its busy Bellavista Terrace area. Traditional bins filled quickly, required frequent emptying, and attracted wasps, creating extra work for operations staff and a public health concern for visitors. Bigbelly’s smart waste system was introduced to help manage the high volume of trash more efficiently.

Bigbelly deployed solar-powered compacting bins with CLEAN software and real-time monitoring to optimize collections and improve reporting. The results were strong: average collections in the high season dropped from 20 times per week to 3.4, an 83% reduction in the first year, with 1,220 total collections. Bigbelly also helped eliminate the wasp problem by keeping waste contained, reduced truck trips and carbon footprint, and maintained uninterrupted cellular connectivity even at 850 meters above sea level.
