Case Study: Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory modernizes remote ship communications with Bicom Systems PBXware

A Bicom Systems Case Study

Preview of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Case Study

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University depends on Bicom Systems to provide communication services to an important research ship

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a research institution of Columbia University, faced a significant communications challenge aboard its exploration vessel, which operates in the remote Alaskan waters. They required a robust and easily maintainable telephony system for 55 staff that could be repaired at sea and could flexibly manage trunks from various satellite and port-based providers. After evaluating proprietary systems that were costly and service-dependent, they turned to vendor Bicom Systems for a solution.

Bicom Systems implemented its PBXware software on standard Dell hardware, providing a turnkey solution. This allowed the ship's engineers to independently manage the system, including setting up trunks and utilizing a fax over IP solution. The implementation resulted in a modern communications system with significant cost savings compared to traditional options, giving the crew complete confidence in their ability to maintain reliable contact from any location.
