Major US-Based Telecom Carrier - Customer Case Study

A major US telecom carrier discovered during an internal audit that its legacy NIS directories were not Sarbanes-Oxley compliant. Its environment included more than 4,000 UNIX servers, 1,000 workstations, roughly 137,000 user accounts (fewer than 40,000 active) and 155 separate NIS domains managing per-user UNIX attributes, creating inefficient onboarding/offboarding processes and significant security and compliance risk.

The company deployed BeyondTrust PowerBroker Identity Services and an Active Directory bridge, installing agents across its UNIX/Linux estate, importing NIS maps and mapping users to AD. The project migrated nearly 140,000 accounts, consolidated 155 NIS domains into a single PowerBroker cell, eliminated about 97,000 inactive accounts, extended group policies to UNIX systems, streamlined provisioning/deprovisioning, reduced administrator workload, and restored SOX compliance with built-in reporting.
