Gonzaga Faces the Challenge of Managing Necessary Resources with Limited Controls

Gonzaga University, a private four-year institution in Spokane with more than 2,000 computers, 200+ servers and a highly distributed campus network, faced the challenge of securing a heterogeneous environment where many devices and systems are outside central IT control. With a comprehensive wireless network, shared bandwidth and limited administrative control, CIO Chris Gill needed a way to build security maturity and reduce the risk of malware and vulnerabilities across campus.

Gonzaga deployed BeyondTrust’s Retina CS to gain visibility into the entire infrastructure, prioritize vulnerabilities and distribute responsibility-based reports to system owners. The platform shifted the university from reactive patching to proactive vulnerability management, enabling monthly scans (12× the auditor’s recommendation), faster remediation of critical issues and a structured, best-practice approach to ongoing security.
