The Kroger Company Aligns Manufacturing Facilities Using BetterWorks

The Kroger Company, one of the world’s largest grocery retailers with more than 2,700 stores and roughly 431,000 associates (including about 8,000 in manufacturing across 35 plants), faced a goal-setting and alignment problem: objectives were set annually in Excel and rarely updated as priorities shifted, employees at different levels didn’t always see how their roles connected to corporate strategy, and this lack of alignment threatened the company’s strategic priorities.

Kroger implemented Betterworks to move from tactical, annual reviews to continuous performance management, shifting conversations from the past to future-focused action. Within a year the manufacturing group had 2,269 active goals, 90% alignment across goals and milestones, an average of 12 check-ins per user per quarter, and increased transparency—employees viewed others’ goals 49,000 times with 74% of users looking beyond their own facility—driving cross-facility learning and greater operational efficiency.
