How The University of Phoenix Increased Engagement and Communication with Betterworks

The University of Phoenix, a 3,400-employee higher-education institution, sought to unify staff and adopt a more agile performance culture after going private and appointing a new president. VP of Talent Management Jeff Andes needed leaders to embrace ongoing, communicative check-ins and progressive goal-setting, but employees were reluctant to adopt another complex system—so the solution had to be intuitive and drive behavioral change.

After retiring a legacy annual-review platform, the University partnered with Betterworks to design its “Everyday Performance Development” program, embedding Betterworks’ professional services to build a simple, bi-directional check-in and goal-setting process. Within a year participation in check-ins exceeded 70%, and teams reported greater transparency, agility, and sustained leader-employee conversations supported by ongoing Betterworks partnership.
