A Better Impact Case Study
UnitingCare Queensland, a large social‑service organisation with thousands of volunteers across hospitals, Lifeline services, aged care and community programs, struggled with an outdated Access database and a tangle of spreadsheets that caused data duplication, inaccurate volunteer counts (previously estimated >9,000), and labour‑intensive processes—particularly for large events like the semi‑annual Lifeline Bookfest (1,500 shifts, 700 volunteers) where communications relied on postal letters. To address these issues they selected Better Impact’s volunteer management system (VMS) to replace paper workflows and disparate systems.
UnitingCare implemented Better Impact in February 2020, supported by an expert resource to drive rollout across diverse sites. The platform enabled a major data cleanse, automated scheduling, hours capture and compliance tracking, and produced the organisation’s first Volunteer Impact Report (2023). Better Impact’s ROI calculator estimated annual savings of 4,836 staff hours (valued at $162,750) and a 1,527% ROI; internal ratings rose (satisfaction 3→10, efficiency 4→8, effectiveness 4→8), and the organisation now has clearer oversight of volunteer hours and impact.
