Streamlining Volunteer Management at The Compass Food Bank with Volunteer Impact

The Compass Food Bank, a Mississauga-based food bank run by volunteers, struggled with paper-based processes and spreadsheets that consumed staff time, hindered recruitment and discouraged applicants. Volunteer Manager Sheryl Darlington searched for a volunteer management solution and chose Better Impact’s Volunteer Impact product to replace manual scheduling, reporting and application processes.

Better Impact implemented Volunteer Impact, importing existing data and providing onboarding support so The Compass could offer online applications, shift sign-up, role-based access and automated training. The result: rapid volunteer adoption (200+ active users with only about three still offline), a surge in completed applications and younger volunteers, and much faster reporting (replacing 20+ hours/month of manual work); in 2022 the organization documented distributing over 705,278 pounds of food with 328 volunteers contributing 37,794 hours.
