WSP Uses Advanced 3D Modeling to Optimize the Design of London’s Newest Iconic Skyscraper

WSP was appointed to provide structural modeling and engineering for One Blackfriars, a 50‑story mixed‑use landmark in central London with a three‑level basement, 274 unique apartments, and complex site constraints (remaining demolition elements, variable depths, temporary on‑site marketing suite, and an asymmetrical tower geometry with BMU shafts). To meet these challenges, WSP used Bentley solutions—MicroStation, RAM Concept, and RAM Structural System—to develop integrated 3D models and coordinate a demanding top‑down construction sequence and bespoke apartment layouts.

Using Bentley’s interoperable 3D tools, WSP iterated and optimized framing and floor slab designs (including 225 mm post‑tensioned slabs and specialized column configurations), shared automated production drawings with contractors, and resolved BMU and façade access issues. Bentley’s software cut design time by about 50%, reduced floor concrete volume by 10% (equivalent to five floor plates), improved construction efficiency through combined temporary/permanent works, and delivered a cost‑effective, buildable structural solution for the iconic tower.
