TRC Implements Collaborative 3D Modeling to Deliver New South Street Substation

TRC, an engineering, environmental consulting, and construction management firm, was awarded the EPC contract to rebuild National Grid’s nearly 100-year-old South Street Substation in congested downtown Providence. Facing an aggressive schedule, tight budget, the need to keep the existing substation operational, and to integrate hundreds of subcontractor files and disciplines, TRC turned to Bentley software (including Bentley Substation and ProjectWise) to meet complex coordination and deliverable requirements.

Using Bentley Substation and ProjectWise, TRC built a single integrated master 3D model that incorporated more than 2,000 CAD and third‑party files for cross‑discipline checking and clash detection. Bentley’s tools enabled 3D walkthroughs for stakeholders, revealed a critical busway misalignment that was corrected prior to fabrication, and helped eliminate on-site construction delays and cost overruns while still delivering required 2D MicroStation files—allowing TRC to finish the project on time and within budget.
