Skanska Costain STRABAG JV Uses BIM Processes for Civil Works on Europe’s Largest Railway Project

Skanska Costain STRABAG JV (SCS) was contracted to deliver civil works on the HS2 high‑speed rail project and faced a tight 14‑month early‑contractor‑involvement period to develop a conceptual design for 26 km of complex railway including tunnels, bridges and some 6,000 utility assets. To meet HS2’s PAS 1192 BIM requirements and coordinate a 550+ person, multi‑national team, SCS adopted Bentley solutions—using ProjectWise, AssetWise, OpenBuildings Designer, OpenRail Designer, Navigator and iModel workflows—to create a single, interoperable BIM and connected data environment.

Bentley implemented a managed, asset‑centric BIM system with a shared component library and integrated modeling applications, enabling real‑time access to trusted information and automated 5D estimating. The results included an estimated GBP 1 million saved through early clash detection, GBP 500,000 saved from a 20% reduction in design review time, and GBP 300,000 from more efficient 5D estimating; data quality rose from 40% to 98%, planning time fell by 30%, 250 drawings were eliminated, searching time was cut by over 50%, and design changes were reduced by 50%.
