Sichuan Road and Bridge Sets New Benchmark for Regional Smart Highways

Sichuan Road and Bridge Group (SRB) was the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor for the CNY 24.6 billion Chengdu–Yibin Expressway — a 155 km, mountainous smart-highway with 154 bridges, four tunnels and 17 interchanges. Constrained by a three-year schedule, complex terrain, multiple subcontractors, and critical line-of-sight safety issues, SRB sought digital workflows and BIM-based reality modeling and partnered with Bentley to pilot OpenRoads Designer, OpenRoads ConceptStation, LumenRT, ProStructures and a Bentley-based construction information platform.

Using Bentley’s open BIM and reality modeling applications, SRB modeled and simulated sight distances, deployed a cloud construction-management platform, and integrated ProStructures into a smart beam fabrication system. The Bentley-enabled solution identified 103 design issues (saving CNY 4.5 million), resolved 14 line-of-sight risks (saving CNY 7 million), reduced the construction period by 124 days, and delivered total cost savings of CNY 17.5 million; process efficiency improved by more than 50%, production by over 20%, and modeling efficiency by 15%, while reducing land acquisition and environmental impact.
